NEWTON, Iowa (June 22, 2009) - - Team PBIR driver of the No. 35 Firestone Indy Lights car, Charlie Kimball started eighth and finished seventh in Sunday's Miller Lite 100 at Iowa Speedway.
Kimball climbed in his race car for Practice 1. Having never raced at Iowa Speedway, Kimball took some time to acclimate to the 7/8-mile track. Once comfortable, he found the car was fast and finished fourth in practice.
The weather became a factor in Practice 2, as the day heated up so did the track temperature. Kimball made runs in race trim and the team simulated the qualifying setup. After encountering traffic on quick laps, Kimball finished fifth in his half of the field putting him eighth or ninth overall.Â
With the two practices completed, Kimball went out to qualify the No. 35 car. Having drawn the fourth spot to go out and make his qualifying run, the rookie driver earned the eighth position on the grid for the Miller Lite 100.
When the green flag dropped for the 115-lap race, Kimball immediately gained positions and by Lap 3 was in sixth. Kimball maintained his position until Lap 17 where he fell one spot and again on Lap 22. While continuing to maintain a top-ten position, on Lap 110 he ran the fastest lap of all competitors. Kimball finished seventh in the Miller Lite 100.
"I was pleased with Charlie's performance in this race," stated Kane Williams, Vice President of Motorsports for Team PBIR. "This is the first time he has ever been on this track and he was fast off of the truck. I am looking forward to next week because we have tested there and we will be up front."
Next week, Team PBIR heads to Watkins Glen International for the 29 laps/98.6 miles race. The No. 35 team tested there last week and was very successful. |
