The first 24 Hours of LeMons event at Palm Beach International Raceway brought hundreds of racers and as many laughs. Whether it was watching the Empire State Building make its way around the 2-mile road course or the ridiculous penalties in the pits, the event was one of a kind.
The Palm Beach International Raceway maintenance crew may have had the toughest job of the event, as a few cars had to be towed before the green flag was ever displayed. They kept at it all night and day as the $500 cars had issues on track.
BoomPowSurprise took an early lead in the event and never looked back. The team consisting of Peter Baron, Tyler Hook, Jim Kasprzak and Bill Riley were no strangers to the LeMons event. The team mentioned during a CBS 12 interview that they either win or blow their motor. Their motor held in for the 24 hours and they claimed the top spot by 32 laps over Hong Norr – LeMons Logik.
BoomPowSurprise completed 754 laps, or 1533 miles, in their 1994 Ford Probe GT at Palm Beach International Raceway. They were only penalized once for 3 laps. The penalties at the LeMons event were incredibly unique. One team was chained together with multiple locks and given a bag of keys to sort through and unlock themselves. Another team member was saran-wrapped to the top of his car while his crew pushed him around the paddock area.
The race ended as the New Year began and even though not all the teams were running at the finish, everyone was celebrating a successful 24 hours and ringing in the New Year.
